Released version 3.2.3. The most interesting change is the dynamic screen resizing.

Released version 3.2.2. The most interesting change is the addition of support for SDL audio output.

Mp3blaster now compiles cleanly on more systems. It compiles cleanly on cygwin, but also on Mac OS X / Darwin OS.

Updated site layout. All content can now be accessed without page reloads, while still being usable by text-browsers.

The layout is rather boring though; if you are a designer with too much time on your hands and have a nice idea for this site, please get into contact with me (bram @ avontuur . org)! I'll reward you handsomely by linking to your site and giving you credits :)

My demands that must meet the design:

  • KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid). No flashy painful-to-the-eyes layout. It should have a professional touch that is subtle yet appealing.
  • A navigation bar that links to the different sections. May be vertical as well.
  • (A) Logo, copyright notice. I'm not all that attached to the current logo or its font.
  • Preferably no pixel-perfect designs that make it hard to implement in HTML
  • It should scale well on different screens. Minimum screen size: 1024x768
  • Large contrasts for text/background such that visibly impaired people can read it easily.
  • I like dark backgrounds!

Released version 3.2.1. From this version on, mp3blaster is hosted on sourceforge.

Development has been rather slow. The reason for this is that I am in the process of developing a new mp3blaster that is totally different architecture-wise. This process is a very slow one though, so that's why I at least keep fixing bugs in the current version. I have been holding off patches until now, but if you have (found) a bug(fix), please drop a note on the forum!

  • Q: Does mp3blaster support ALSA playback?
A: Yes. Configure mp3blaster for SDL playback (AudioDriver=sdl in config), and set environment variable SDL_AUDIODRIVER to alsa before starting mp3blaster.

About

Mp3blaster is an mp3 player for computers running a UNIX-like operating system, e.g. Linux, Free/Net/OpenBSD, etc. Its interface is entirely text based, thereby eliminating the need for a graphical environment like X-Windows. This does not limit the way you can control the player whilst playing though; just like any graphical mp3 player, there are cd-style buttons like play, stop, pause, next track, etc.

History

While hardly anyone had ever heard of mp3 back in early 1997, I began to build up my own mp3 collection. As a Linux (text console) adept, I was heavily frustrated by the lack of a decent mp3 player. There was a (at the time) very popular command-line based mp3 player though, called 'splay'. I figured I could use its mpeg decoding library and write my own interface in ncurses to control it. The plan was there!

Thinking about how to implement this interface, I also wondered why all mp3players had such plain playlist functionality! I like the ability to chuck a bunch of CD's in a multi-CD cd player, and then play the CD's in random order. In such a way that the cd player selects one of the five CD's at random, and then plays the entire disc. This continues, until all discs have been played. No mp3 player could do this, so I decided to add it to mine.

The first usable version (0.9.0, named 'mp3player', how's that for originality?) reared its ugly head in august 1997. Since then, lots of things have changed.. You can read the ChangeLog supplied with the source if you are interested in it.

Suggestions?
